Variable issue: After birth, a baby must learn how fast/how deep to breathe to get needed oxygen in various levels of activity from quiet sleep to full fussy behavior. Premi's are less capable in figureing out the cycles, often forgetting to breathe when needed.Although brief pauses are nl, long pauses can lead to low o2 brain injury.Drs use monitors & various meds to manage the premi problem until it resolves.
