Drug seekers: Most physicians now do urine drug testing, opiate contracts, and monitor for any abusive behavior. Most states allow doctors, pharmacists to access the prescription drug monitoring programs for monitoring multiple prescriptions. A proper history and physical can diagnose most pain problems for which a short term opiate may be prescribed. There is limited role for opiates for chronic noncancer pain.
