Various reasons: Usually it is because of loss of appetite caused by an ill-defined effect of the cancer. It can also be due to treatment effects such as nausea and poor appetite from chemotherapy, difficulty swallowing due to radiation and increased metabolic demands from recovering from surgery. Very advanced lung cancer also puts the body into a catabolic or "breaking down tissue" state.
