How accurate is it that people have found the cure to diabetes?

Not really: There is no cure for diabetes necessarily. However, some patients with diabetes who undergo surgery for obesity lose significant amounts of weight and as such their sugar levels normalize. Sometimes these people are referred to as cured, but it is only due to the weight loss, not the procedure itself or any medication.
