Treat the casue: What is causing the migraine. Until you know that you don't know how to treat the migraine. Try putting your fingers over where you get the headaches and then bite down or open wide. If the muscles move it may be the cause of your headache, so treat the cause and don't take medications to just treat the effects or signs and symptoms.

Root of problem best: 1. Look for a doctor interested in treating headaches, especially bad ones. 2. Go prepared with a headache diary and list of meds tried in the past. 3. Look for triggers- which tend to be things or actions which precede the aura or headache by no more than 2 hrs. Document these. 4. Finally, be a partner with your doc in trying to get to the root of the problem- don't just be a passive patient.

Triptans: In most cases, a class of medications called "triptans" are the best way to stop migraine headaches. Triptans include medications like sumatriptan (Imitrex) and zolmitriptan (Zomig). Regardless of the medication which you take, you should lay down in a quiet, darkened room, close your eyes and try to relax. For information see: http://understandingmigraine.blogspot.com/

Abortive Therapy: For more severe attacks, an abortive medication such as dihydroergotamine (DHE), sumatriptan (Imitrex) or one of the newer triptan medications is often prescribed. Recent research findings suggest that the efficacy of treatment may depend more on the phase of the migraine attack at which the medication is administered rather than the specific medication.
