Up to 2 weeks: Pink eye is the term used fro viral conjunctivitis. It can be contagious for up to 2 weeks and is one of the most contagious infections in the world. It will go away by itself, and there is currently no medication that can treat it. Avoiding direct physical contact with others while the eye is pink and irritated is the best way to prevent spreading the disease.

Viral infection: By far the most common pink eye is a viral infection of the lining of the eye (the conjunctiva) over the sclera (the white of the eye). It is contagious, irritating, may affect the vision a little and is very socially unacceptable. There are other causes of red eye, some serious. So you should see your ophthalmologist to get a diagnosis and proper treatment.

Extremely: Another term for pink eye (viral conjunctivitis) is epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, emphasis on "epidemic." the virus is found in the tears and can survive on surfaces (tabletops, chairs, etc.) for many days. If you touch this surface and then touch your eye you can get the disease. Frequent hand washing and cleaning such surfaces can reduce transmission. It is not spread by other bodily fluids.
