BV: Bacterial vaginosis is an overgrowth of gardnerella vaginalis - a bacteria present in the vagina in over 70% of women. Symptoms are usually an increase in vaginal discharge frequently associated with a fishy odor.

Imbalance: The gardnerella bacteria is present normally in the vaginas of most women. Change in hormones, vaginal ph, stress, leads to imbalance or xs gardnerella which can cause a thin discharge & odor. The odor can be exacerbated by sexual activity. Onset of BV is also associated w/new sexual partner, although it is not specifically sexually transmitted.
