Doctor for neck pain: Initially i would suggest your pcp if he/she is good with history and examinations. For further evaluation i would suggest a pain specialist (i guess I am biased as I am one!). Depending on the nature of this pain a rehab physician may also be able to help. I might be able to provide better guidance if i know some more specifics as "neck pain" is such a generalized term.

Internist: I would start with your internist/family doctor and they will be best able to perform an initial evaluation and refer you to an appropriate specialist if necessary like myself (pain management). Additionally, spine surgeons, chiropractors, neurologists, and physical therapists all play an important role in diagnosis and treatment of back pain.
