Unknown origin: We do not know what causes canker sores in each individual who has episodes of them. They are often related to stress, but can also be caused by certain foods, sharp areas of a tooth, or medications can be implicated. They usually disappear on their own in 1-2 weeks, but can be reduced in severity by using a prescription mouth rinse, such as chlorhexidine, or in extreme cases an oral steroid.

Odyssey Diode Laser: As dr. Brand mentioned, the etiology is still unknown for aphthous ulcers. You can have minor isolated ones or major aphthae which can affect greater areas of you oro-pahryngeal mucosa. The rinses dr. Brand mentioned can prove helpful. For patients in my practice that are bothered by larger ones and even just more painful smaller ones, I use a diode laser to quickly and effectively treat them.
