What causes you to have to take pins out of your hair before an x-ray?

Yes: If your pins is made of metal, the answer is yes. All metals such as earings, pins, tong rings will show opaque white on the xray and may also show xray scattering (a ghost white image) and causes the xray to be less readable. Removed them if possible. If the pins are plastic, you do not need to.
