PTU (propylthiouracil): Many women have a transient elevation in thyroid levels in the first trimester and are really not hyperthyroid. But for those women who truly have hyperthyroidism, ptu (propylthiouracil) is generally used in the first trimester. Both ptu (propylthiouracil) and Methimazole are category d and have risks associated with them. Some doctors recommend switching to Methimazole in the second trimester but this is controversial.

Propylthiouracil: Hyperthyroidism is an important medical complication to get under control quickly in pregnancy. There are two common medications ptu (propylthiouracil) and methimazole. Methimazole is associated with certain birth defects so pregnant women should be switched or started on ptu. This medication is safe to take whereas untreated hyperthyroidism can be very dangerous.
