A compression fracture of t 12 from an injury, do you treat with a brace and later with kyphoplasty?

VCF: Based upon your age, i would be suspicious of osteoporosis as the underlying cause. If a fall from standing, or other low energy injury, this confirms diagnosis. For symptoms that persist, worsen, or are severely limiting, kyphoplasty is an excellent option. Outcomes are better in studies when done sooner than later. Also, make sure you are evaluated for osteoporosis—more fx's can shorten life.

Yes: Any surgery should always be the last option. Kyphoplasty is very simple, and completely alleviates the pain almost every time. But, almost all compression fractures heal on their own without any intervention at all if you wait a few months. Wait for as long as you can tolerate the pain. If the pain goes away, then great. If it gets so bad you can't stand it, then have the kyphoplasty.

I treat early: Kyphoplasty is an excellent treatment for patients with osteoporotic compression fractures that are failing conservative care or are in debilitating pain. Proper indications and patient selection are key. Check out kyphon.Com.
