LAE: Left atrial enlargement may occur as a result of abnormalities of the mitral valve. Once this has been repaired or replaced (sounds like mitral stenosis) the atrium may or may not return to normal size, but the heart should be functioning better. Best that your sister or you discuss this at length with the cardiologist and cardiovascular surgeon. Hope all goes well.

Nothing: Left atrial enlargement can occur because of severe mitral regurgitation. (leaking valve). Studies have shown that severely enlarged left atrium is associated with shorter life expectancy but after successful repair this returns to normal. It is good your sister had her valve repaired.
