Dry mucus: A viral upper and lower respiratory infection typically starts out with lots of thin, clear secretions, then during the later phases the mucus is thick and sticky. You need to be aggressive with lots of fluids and mucus thinners like guaifenesin, which is otc. However, after about 10 days, the likelihood of a bacterial rhinosinusitis and bronchitis is greater. So, you may need to see md for rx.

Cough, mucus: Avoid cigarette smoke. Drink plenty of water; use vaporizer &/or mucolytic like Mucinex (guaifenesin) to loosen mucus & facilitate coughing it out. Moisture from shower can also help. If fever, chills, aches, see pcp to be checked for bronchitis or pneumonia or influenza, allergies, acid reflux.

Sounds like asthma: Or bronchitis or postnasal drip or something else. You probably need inhaled steroids and more. Check with your lung doc. Ask about pulmonary function testing.
