i am a 50 yo female suffering from sharp, shooting pain on my right side about at the waist. it is not back pain and is not radiating down my leg.

It may be bursitis: You may have inflammation of your trochanteric bursa, a fluid filled sac that reduces friction at the outside of your hip. Try ice and antiflammatory medicine and consult a doctor.
