See below: Sometimes that is only way that the baby can delivered with a vaginal delivery. The other alternative is a c-section which is more invasive. Talk to your doctor about concerns and options.

No: It is not mandatory to have an episiotomy with every vaginal delivery. Sometimes it is necessary to allow the baby to come out more easily or in an effort to prevent a larger laceration that would occur naturally. Your doctor will decide on the need for one at the time of your delivery.
