Simple tests: Fecal incontinence could be due to excessive loose stools that come out too fast for the sphincter or weakness of anal sphincter that can not hold formed stools or urgent contractions of the rectum overpowering anal sphincter. A good history and physical examination by an md is helpful in figuring out the problem before additional simple tests are required.

History: Usually fecal incontinence is diagnosed by taking a thorough history. The underlying cause is often suspected after history and exam. Usually an anorectal manometry is performed to better understand the cause of incontinence and to determine the best treatments.
