Try not to: Although clear liquids (tea, coffee, water) will not cause problems with gallbladder imaging (which is part of the typical liver ultrasound), some centers want to limit caffeine. Any fat, including creamer, should not be consumed. Please make every attempt to follow the preparation instructions. Avoiding black coffee if possible would be best.

Shouldn't: Sometimes even drinking water will make the gallbladder contract. Also, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum before the exam can cause you to swallow air. The swallowed air makes the examination harder and less capable of seeing into your abdomen by blocking sound waves.
