Is it ok to take benadryl (diphenhydramine) if pregnant and currently taking levothyroxine for hypothyroidism?

Antihistamines: Antihistamines can be used depending on the trimester but Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not the best one. Contact your OB before you take anything.

Yes: Levothyroxine will not cause any problems with an antihistamine. However; the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not the best antihistamine to use with pregnancy. There are others that are safer such as Claritin but your trimester determines whether you can use it or not. Please discuss with doctor any medications before you take them.

Yes.: No problem - talk to your obstetrician to see if Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is best choice and do not drive or operate heavy machines while drowsy.
