Smaller than elbow: Ear wax is common & normal. Major concern is placing things in the ear canal to take it out. This only pushes the wax in deeper & risks perforation of the eardrum. 'nothing should be placed in the ear canal that 's smaller than your elbow'. If the baby is tugging ear, buildup can be softened by placing 2 drops baby or mineral oil into ear canal. Rinse ears when washing. Wipe outside ear only.
