Kidney stones: Eswl uses high-energy shock waves produced by an electrical discharge, which are transmitted through water and directly focused onto a renal or ureteral stone with the aid of fluoroscopy. The change in tissue density between the soft tissues of the kidney and the hard stone results in a release of energy at the stone surface, which fragments the stone. The patient is sedated or anesthetized.
