Fast: Generally the blood test is done when you've been fasting and have not eaten for 12 hours. However a hemoglobin a1c test does not require you to fast. You should contact your doctor and find out which blood tests they plan to do and ask whether you need to fast or not.

Fast for 8 hours: The best test is a fasting glucose test. You must fast for at least 8 hours for this to be valid. Some people also test hba1c, which you do not need to fast for. Many doctors will also get a fasting lipid profile at the same time.

Depends on test: If getting a hgba1c, then does not matter. If a glucose tolerance (/or challenge) test, then don't eat, as it starts fasting.
