Enzyme activation: Hypercalcemia appears to cause pancreatitis through two mechanisms. These are: 1. Decreased secretion of digestive enzymes into the gut so that they accumulate in the pancreatic cells. 2. Increased activation of these enzymes within the cells where they start digesting the pancreas. Alcohol intake, gallstones, obesity and high triglycerides can all make acute pancreatitis more likely.
