Good thought: Synthetic oxytocin, pitocin, is only used intravenously to help with labor. The new mom should be making plenty of her own oxytocin. Being a new mom, and not getting enough sleep, can make it difficult to bond with a baby at first. This will come with time. If her feelings are intense, and do not improve, she should be seen by her doctor to see if she has postpartum depression.

Not approved: Some men &women seem not to produce a full complement of oxytocin in all situations -but research is at a very early stage. More importantly perhaps, some infants/children lack oxytocin, & there is increasing speculation that this contributes to the development of autism or aspergers. Oxytocin is not produced in us in a suitable form & there are very few of us with access to use it clinically.
