Speech delay: Motor development (crawling and standing) happens independently of speech development. So one does not necessarily have to occur with the other. That being said, a 21 month old usually knows several words, and is starting to put together two-word sentences. If he indeed only says two words total, i recommend making an appointment with his doctor. He should have a hearing test as well.

Yes, that is a delay: In expressive language development. Ask his doctor to refer him for a complete developmental assessment to determine if he has significant delays in receptive language, social communication, cognitive self-help/adaptive, fine motor, ; gross motor skills, as well. Early intervention therapy can help his development. His doctor can also search for genetic or other medical causes of his delays.
