A member asked:

Husband has gout. since seafood is to be avoided, can he take his fish oil supplement?

Diet not important: He does not have to avoid fish. If his serum uric acid is well controlled on Allopurinol his diet need not be modified except for minimizing alcohol intake. Remember, shellfish have relatively higher levels of purine not other fish.

Probably: Pharmaceutical grade fish oil pills should not contain whole purines and should therefore be safe to take, even with gout.
