A doctor has provided 1 answer

Another infection: Influenza is often associated with signficant coughing with chest congestion. One of the flu's most common complications is pneumonia, and with this often the cough becomes more productive of colored sputum and sometime blood. All the coughing associated with the influenza or other chest infection can lead to the costrocondritis which is inflammation in the joint between your ribs and chest plate.
