Growing gum: What you have could be what we call pericoronitis or the inflammation of the gum tissue around the coronal portion of the partially impacted third molars or wisdom teeth. Please have your dentist look at it and evaluate either for operculectomy or extraction.Meanwhile just gargle with 3% hydrogen peroxide and spit it out couple of times a day to control the inflammation

Swollen gums: It could be that your third molar is trying to erupt or you might have an accessed tooth or gum. Please see a dentist as soon as possible to avoid excessive pain and infection.

Pericoronitis : Exam needed. But sounds like a pericoronitis, which is a swelling like you describe around a partially erupted wisdom tooth. The size , duration, shape, color of the lesion is important. Time to see a dentist soon..
