Muscle or spine.: You may have an inflamed sternoclidomastoid muscle, a large muscle in the lateral neck, that causes spasms and pain. This is called "torticollis". Or you might have "facet syndrome", a degeneration of the facet joints that allow us to rotate the neck and back. If facet syndrome, chiropractic may be very helpful. In either case, antiinflammatories and ice/heat are sure to help.

Torticolis(wry neck): It may be due to inflamed muscles in neck or spasm in the muscles due to other causes. Most of the time this condition lasts for 3 to 5 days and responds to anti inflammatory meds and muscle relaxants .But rarely it may be result of other disorders, and may need further investigation.
