A member asked:

Do surgeons reattach a mobilised ascending colon after performing an appendectomy for a retroperitoneal appendicitis our is it just left unattached?

Unattached: Mobilization of the cecum may be required when removing a retrocecal, retroperitoneal appendix, not the entire ascending colon. The only reason to reattach the colon is if the cecum was very floppy and susceptible to volvulus. I would love to know what your follow-up question is?

Left unattached: Sometimes in removal of the appendix the surgeon must mobilize part of the cecum to get to the appendix. This generally is of no concern.
