Lubricate: Just a mucoid discharge in the morning is a sign of dry eye. Low-grade infection and allergic conjunctivitis can also cause this but would be associated with additional symptoms. A bland ophthalmic ointment used in both eyes at bedtime should help, and is unlikely to cause harm if you are not allergic to the ingredients.

Blepharitis: Your symptoms sound typical of blepharitis, or granulated eyelids. This is caused by inflammation of the eyelid margins where the lashes come out. In order to help improve your symptoms, you should start a treatment regimen at bedtime. This includes cleaning your lashes with a gentle cleansing pad such as ocusoft. Then you would benefit from an antibiotic ointment or gel from your eye doctor.
