STD vs PID: Think of pid or pelvic inflammatory disease as a subset of sexually transmitted disease. You need to have an std in order to have pid but you don't have to have pid if you have an std. Having an std means just that - that you have an infection. However, having pid means the infection has spread to your internal organs eg fallopian tube, ovaries, etc, which is why it tends to hurt more.
