A 19-year-old member asked:

why does liquid come out of my nipples?

Hard to know?: Is the discharge milk or clear liquid? What is your age. What medicatons are you on? Nipple discharge could be somewhat normal, however, without knowing you or your history, some bad things could be going on. It is important for you to be seen, examined and perhaps have some testing (mammogram or mri). Wish i could be of more help, but you just need to be seen.

Lanolin: You can apply lanolin cream or express breast milk and let it dry onto your nipple. The fat from the breast milk helps to heal chapped nipples.

Dr. Scott J. Wolfson
Pediatrics 22 years experience
They may be dry: If you are a new to breastfeeding your nipples may become raw and irritated until they "toughen up" during the process. Lanolin or your own milk can help ease the transition.

Vasospasm: This could be a sign of vasospasm, which is when your blood vessels constrict and restrict blood flow to the area. To help with this keep your whole body warm and breasfeed in a warm place. As soon as a vasospasm occurs, interrupt pumping or feeding and warm your nipples for 10min with a warm cloth. Avoiding caffeine and smoking can help.
A member asked:

How can I avoid getting marks on my nipples while pumping?

Dr. Jennifer Mink
Pediatrics 19 years experience
Less suction: Vigorous pumping can lead to suction bruises. If your pump has a suction strength adjustment, lessen the suction to see if it resolves the problem. Regardless, suction bruises may be unsightly, but they are harmless.
A 40-year-old member asked:

Can one increase the size of their nipples?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Richard Bensinger
Ophthalmology 52 years experience
No practical way: Nipple size is what you get and there is no pharmacological or exercise means to increase the size. They will enlarge somewhat during pregnancy. If you are obsessed with your nipple size, you could consider a cosmetic enlargement with a carefully applied donut ring of tattoo but this is an extreme solution.
