I am told that the only option open to me is to have my coccyx removed. can you give me an idea as to the long term effects of this procedure?

Depends: Coccygectomy is an uncommon procedure. The purpose of the surgery is pain relief in patients who have otherwise failed all other treatment options - so the primary long term effect is pain relief, if the surgery has no complications. It may take months for the pain to completely resolve. Like all spinal procedures, there is no guarantee of pain relief.
