2nd, 3rd trimesters.: Total serum calcium levels decrease during pregnancy corresponding to plasma volume increase and Albumin concentration decline, however the active or ionized calcium levels remain completely stable throughout pregnancy. The maternal plasma volume expansion starts in the first trimester but is more pronounced in the second and third.
