What is wrong when your perineum is split open?

Hard to tell: Perineum is the area between the vulva and anus(in females) or the base of the penis and the anus ( males). I guess somebody has to see it. Is it a tear? Is it after delivery of baby? Is there any skin disorder associated to it? Did you have any injury? Are you riding a bicycle?
