What do doctors do to detect thyroid irregularities?

Thyroid: There are two aspects to detection. One is function and possible inflammation which involves a simple blood test . This can detect antibodies attacking the thyroid and decrease or increase in function. The next would be ultrasound to detect physical abnormalities with the gland like nodules or cysts.
