Child probably: Has meckel's diverticulum, a congenital malformation. Or it could be some other congenital diverticulum. This is different process than acquired diverticulitis coli of old age.

Doesn't happen: The only conditions with any similarity to this old age problem is a congenital meckel's diverticulum & a perianal fistula. The kid colon is stretchy and will balloon /enlarge rather than form diverticula.
