Canaloplasty: The canal is a pathway in which aqueous leaves the eye. There are medications that act to increase outflow of fluid before schlemm's canal and decrease eye pressure. Some surgeries like canaloplasty directly help flow in the canal. Your surgeon can determine whether you would be a candidate for this procedure.

Related: schlemm's canal is an anatomical structure which collects fluid from the trabecular meshwork draining aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye. Most resistance to outflow of fluid resulting in elevated intraocular pressure and glaucoma occurs in the trabecular meshwork not in Schlemm's canal. Surgical procedures have been developed accessing Schlemm's canal to aid in lowering IOP.

Anatomy: Schlemms canal is where the aqueous humor drains into after it flows through the trabecular meshwork. It the is transmitted to collector channels then eventually into aqueous veins back into the venous circulation. Resistance in this outflow pathway is believed to be the primary reason for elevated IOP. Treatment consists of lowering IOP by a variety of ways: medications, laser, & surgery.

Fluid drainage site: Schlemms canal is the drainage canal carrying aqueous fluid from the circulation inside the eye out of the eye to the blood stream. Glaucoma mostly is a condition in which the aqueous inflow exceeds the capacity of the outflow at normal pressures so the pressure elevates to overcome the resistance. Treatment by drugs lowers the inflow which then brings down the pressure.
