Painful: A diaper rash can be very painful- it's basically raw skin in a sensitive area. Clean gently with clear water and pat dry. Apply a heavy coating of a barrier ointment- a&d, vaseline or desitin (zinc oxide diaper cream). Don't scrub it off when you change the diaper next, just rinse and reapply as needed. Soak him in the bathtub to clean stool and start fresh when needed. If not better, see your doctor.
