Ingrown Toenails: An ingrown toenail is usually caused by a nail deformity. Most individuals who have pain from an ingrown toenail try to clip it out themselves. When that happens they cause a sharp piece of nail called a spicule to develop and the spicule pierces the skin along the nail edge. That becomes very painful and sometimes becomes infected. Visit a podiatrist for the proper treatment for this problem.

Removal...: ...Is the only permanent solution. Just the painful border can be removed, or the entire nail if necessary. After removal you can let the border grow out again, or your doctor can use a chemical to stop the nail from regrowing. If you're concerned, don't perform bathroom surgery on yourself. That can lead to an infected ingrown toenail, which could require antibiotics.
