Possibly Serious: A blood clot in a superficial vein is not an emergency. A blood clot in a deep vein is concerning because the clot can dislodge and travel to the lungs, which can be fatal. The deep clots, also called dvt's, require monitoring by vascular surgeons who treat the clots with anticoagulation medication and possibly surgical intervention.
