What are the causes of canker sores and how do you get rid of them?

Virus: Canker sores are usually caused by a virus like the herpes virus. Most people can tell when they are going to get one and that is the time to start treating the area. Use an otc like abreva, or get a rx for Acyclovir ointment. If you get the sore frequently then you can be put on chronic suppressive therapy. This is where you take one anti-viral pill a day for a year to suppress the virus.

Often stress: Stress, injury/ trauma (scratching the are with coarse or sharp food or utensil) lack of sleep can all bring on canker sores. If infrequent, try colgate orabase to protect the area and reduce pain. If frequent try using toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate. See your dentist.
