Middle ear infection: An inner ear infection is very rare and can be very serious. However, you may be referring to otitis media, which is an infected collection of fluid behind the ear drum. If untreated, it will often resolve on its own. However, you can also have complications from it anywhere from simply rupturing the ear drum to more complex things like meningitis or mastoiditis.
