Fasting glucose: The best test is a fasting glucose test. You must fast for at least 8 hours for this to be valid. If this is above 125 on two occasions then the diagnosis of diabetes is made. Some people also test hba1c, which you do not need to fast for. A value above 6.5% indicates diabetes, if you are worried about diabetes do talk to your doctor about having a test.
