Any number of things: Changes in fingernails can be indicative of an underlying medical disorder. Ridges or bumps can be related to iron deficiency. Anemia, lupus, heart disease, and thyroid disorders can also can changes to the fingernails. Fungal infection also can cause bumps and discoloration of the nailbed. Seeing your primary care physican can rule out many of these disorders.

Nail pitting: Causes of nail pitting include psoriasis, alopecia areata(a form of hair loss), eczema, reiter's syndrome(reactive arthritis), incontinentia pigmenti(neurocutaneous disorder) and in children this can be a normal condition.
