Examination needed.: There are so many reasons for what you describe that a personal examination by a physician is really the only way to make a reasonable diagnosis. Most problems are benign but there are rare tumors of the nail bed that can be very painful and will not resolve on their own. Give it a week or so and if the problem persists, see a hand surgeon.

Onychomycosis: Need more information. Is the area red? dry skin? Is the nail changing colors (i.e. green, yellow, etc)? Is it all nails or just one nail?
