See below: Mrsa colonization means that your son is already infected with a staph bacteria. A colonization means that it is probably at only a low level. Staph aureus is one of the common bacteria that all people have on their skin. It becomes an infection when it overwhelms the body's defenses and caused problems. If a person has a staph infection it is possible that they can transmit this to any person.

Staph aureus: Colonization is not infection. You can possibly interrupt the carriage state using nasal Mupirocin ointment twice a day and washing only with soap containing chlorhexadine for a month or more. This will reduce or clear carriage state in about 50% of persons. It can be gotten again from others who touch you when they are colonized.
