Visual inspection: In a routine comprehensive oral exam, the dentist will likely examine your tongue during a soft tissue screening. It is also inspected when completing and oral cancer screening. A dentist will look at all four surfaces, inspecting for lesions or abnormalities. Causes of abnormalities may be fungal, viral, autoimmune, neoplastic, trauma, etc.
