A 33-year-old member asked:

What are the causes of the iris of the eye to turn yellow?

Depends: Are saying the actual iris inside the eye? Or the tissue around the iris on the surface of the eye. The iris is fixed in color and will not change unless there is severe internal inflammation or actual trauma. Yellowing around the iris can be a sign of hepatitis or other liver diseases. Check with your family doctor to evaluate this.

This is a situation: Where a picture is worth a thousand words. Either take a high res photo of what you see that concerns you and post it in a HeathTap prime consult with an ophthalmologist or better yet, especially if there is pain or blurred vision, see a doc in urgent care or the ER today. It's unusual to have clouding or blurring of the cornea in someone your age. An eye exam will sort this out easily. Good luck

And then there is pigment variation and heterochromia, where, as Dr. Lipkin correctly stated the eyes have yellow mixed in with other colors or where each eye is one color that differs from the other. I am assuming this is a change, however, as something that had been present throughout your life should not have suddenly raised concern. There are myriad medical things that "yellow" the pupil, etc.

Eyes turning yellow: Jaundice from hepatitis. Also a blockage in your bile duct of your gall bladder. Go see your doctor if this occurs.
